Press Conference

Does ACTA violate fundamental rights?

The Greens/EFA in the European parliament invite you to the presentation of the report "Opinion on the compatibility of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) with the European Convention on Human Rights & the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights".

Time: Tuesday, 4th October, 13:00-13:30

Place: European Parliament press room, PHS 0A50

Speakers:

Jan Philipp Albrecht, MEP

Prof. Dr. Douwe Korff, co-author of the report

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) violates fundamental rights principles and goes beyond the existing legal framework of the European Union. This is the result of a new report(1) which will be presented by co-author Douwe Korff in the European parliament in Brussels.

The report comes at an important moment in time: The ACTA agreement will have been signed by the United States and a few other governments on 1st of October, and the EU Commission is preparing for the European signature and subsequent submission to the European Parliament for ratification. In line with previous reports and studies by well-known academics, the new report concludes that the agreement violates fundamental rights and the rule of law, and therefore should not be approved by the European Parliament.

Co-Autor Douwe Korff will be present at the press conference and will answer questions.

Remarks:

1) Opinion on the compatibility of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) with the European Convention on Human Rights & the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, written by Prof. Dr. Douwe Korff, London Metropolitan University and Dr. Ian Brown, Oxford Internet institute.
